Ghosts in the machine.

Filed under: Main — Mackanlee @ 5:49 pm

A friend of mine told me about an animated film he had seen where the main character was building a machine. He kept building and building, I’m not sure exactly what it was for. But towards the end of the movie the guy crawls into the machine and dissapears not to be seen again.

To me it was a good metaphor for internet addiction. Or computer and gadget addiction in general. It seems like every one now has an Iphone 4 or another gadget that allows them to be online 24/7. When you are talking with people their concentration or trains of thought are often broken by the incessant need to check emails or other random updates. In a room where three people are living or working often they are all immersed in a computer having sparse contact with each other.

Another good image of this was when the little girl Carol Anne in the movie Poltergeist heard ghostly voices in the TV. She was mesmerized by them and before you knew it she was pulled in by the malevolent forces. It took a great deal of work to get her back out.

I too can feel that strong pull that the computer and the internet has on me. Much time passes while Im just randomly surfing the seas of cyberspace not really doing anything except just being caught in a loop of websites that basically dont have that much happening on them. Real life awaits folks, I think its time to start digital detoxing a little so we don´t fall through that crack in reality and start living in the computer world.

There is the moral of all human tales;

‘Tis but the same rehearsal of the past.
First freedom and then Glory – when that fails,
Wealth, vice, corruption – barbarism at last.
And History, with all her volumes vast,
Hath but one page.

-from Byron’s Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage

This is cool
